Steps to Take When Your Pet is Missing

Allie was missing and her Mommie-Peep wrote this to help others

  • Text message all contacts with picture of pet, if possible. Ask them to forward message to their contacts as well.
  • If you have a fence around your home, leave gate(s) open so pet can easily return home.
  • Call dog warden, all veterinarian offices, emergency animal hospitals, SPCA, shelters, etc.
*Some places may allow you to email or fax a flier to
          them so
they have a picture of your pet. Ask if they will post a
          flier in their office.
  • Make a flier with a picture of your pet on it.
  • Buy supplies to make fliers (bright colored paper, plastic covers (to protect against rain), printer supplies (ink, toner, etc.), staple gun and staples or thumb tacks, and heavy duty tape.
  • Distribute/Post as many fliers as possible!!!
*You may want to give fliers to friends/family members
and ask them to distribute/post in a designated are
so you can distribute/post them more efficiently and
          rapidly.
*Give to people who are always on the roads - Postal
workers, UPS, waste management, school bus drivers,
city bus drivers, ambulance drivers, etc.
*Some places (corporate businesses, post office lobbies,
etc.) may not allow you to post in public so ask if they
will post by time clocks, break rooms, etc. so
          employees will see it.
*Post fliers in schools – kids are eager to help look for
          your pet.
*Think about where people might be going on particular
days. (Ex: post fliers near churches on Sundays,
          bars/restaurants on weekends, banks on
          Fridays/Mondays, etc.)

  • Talk to people on the streets as you are driving around posting fliers for your pet.
*Walking and Bicycle riding are good ways to search as
          well.
*Bring along a backpack with a leash, collar, flashlight,
blanket, water, and treats in it.

  • If you have another dog(s), bring them along on your searches as they may pick up your missing pet’s scent or vice versa.
  • Place dirty laundry of pet’s owner and/or pet bed outside of your home in hopes that your pet will pick up scent from afar.
  • Think of friends/family who are police officers, fireman, etc. that may be able to pass along the info/description on their radios.
  • Ask local cab companies to put it on their radio to their drivers.
  • Call radio stations and television stations (you might have a local access channel in your city or a nearby city). Some radio stations may have websites that they can post a picture…then the DJ’s can direct listeners to view the webpage.
  • Email all contacts with attached flier and ask them to post fliers at their workplaces and pass on to their friends/family.
  • Post flier or description on tppc.tv, craigslist.com, facebook.com, myspace.com, doggyspace.com, etc.

When someone calls with a sighting...
Ask current location and what direction pet was heading
towards and get name and number of caller.  Bring name
and number with you when you go out searching.

  • After you get a few sightings…
*create a map on google maps (or something similar)
          and
indicate where/when the sightings occurred and email
to as many friends/family members that you can. Ask
them to pass it on to their friends/family.
*place dirty laundry and/or pet bed in that vicinity in
hopes that the pet will track the scent and go to that
place. Check back often to see if pet is there.
*Drive around that vicinity often – ask friends/family to
          help with search.
-Ex: assign people shifts (30min., 1 hour, or more)
so everyone doesn’t have to be out looking at
                       the same time.
