As pet owners, we all have to deal with poo…that unpleasant, unsightly, stinky, nasty topic.  But what do you do with your pet’s poo and how does it affect the earth?

Dog poo pick up.

For those who might be using grocery or store bags on pick up patrol during walks, yikes!  Think about this…Estimates have plastic bags lasting between 500-1000 years in landfills.

So at least 5 generations from now, our great, great, great, great, great grandkids will be dealing with the fruits or poots of our pets labors.  Compound the population growth of pets and people and 500 years from now the earth will be more populated and pet poopulated.

There are some manufacturers making biodegradable bags now. Biobagusa.com is one company, and Poopbags.com is another that manufactures bags are made from a combination of corn and other renewable products.  There are no chemical additives but they will decompose between 60-90 days in an open land fill.

We found another company, ZeroWasteUSA.com that manufactures a bag that biodegrades in 12 months.

As an aside, companies warn against placing these bags containing dog poo into your home composting systems or green bins as you could expose yourself and your gardens to increased e. coli bacteria because dogs are carnivores.
