We had a lovely cat chat with Dr. Katrina Warren, BVSc from Animal Planet’s hit TV show “Housecat Housecall” presented by Purina Cat Chow, now in it’s third season. It’s wonderful to find “Real People” in the broadcast industry who are true animal lovers and concerned for the welfare of our anipals.
We asked Dr. Katrina for some advice regarding the top challenges cat pawrents face.
Cats Have Needs! Managing a Multi-Cat Home-
The first tip centered around managing a multi-cat household. The majority of cat pawrents own more than one cat and they may not realize how territorial cats are by nature. Dr. Katrina advised that “Each cat needs his own resources, including individual food and water bowls, litter box and scratching post. They each need their own area to retreat to, preferably a high climbing area.”
Honestly, as a former single cat household, we never knew that their was a different rule book for a multi-cat household. We would have never thought cats needed their own resources, so this is great information!
Does Kitty Know the Difference Between the Imported Italian Leather Couch and the Scratching Post?
Joe asked Dr. Katrina about declawing cats and bad scratching habits. Regarding cat’s claws, Joe stated, “If you are born with it, you should keep it!” Dr. Katrina agreed and stated that in Australia, it is illegal to declaw cats. Dr.Katrina suggests that people need to train their cats to use the scratching post. “Cats scratch to remove the outer layer of their claws. All cats needs to scratch, so you need to offer several different materials for them to scratch. Sprinkle cat nip on the objects and play with your cat and get him used to scratching that material. Clipping the tip of the nail could minimize any damage from unwanted scratching as well.” Cats don’t know that they should scratch on a post so by providing the surface and showing them that’s where they need to scratch, you increase your chances of success.
Learning what your cat needs and providing him with proper outlets is an owner education issue. Dr. Katrina stated that “Cats are living longer, happier lives indoors but make sure you provide the outlets for their natural instincts. They need to exerise, climb, run and chase.” So although cats don’t need to be walked on a leash outside, they need mental and physical stimulation to remain happy and healthy for their lifetime.
