We recently read of a pet’s death from anaphylaxis, or a life-threatening allergic reaction to something ingested or injected.  The pet’s owner, well known blogger, Jenny “The Bloggess” Lawson, simply left her dog secured in his run while she quickly ran to pick up her daughter.  When she returned, her beloved family dog, Barnaby Jones Pickles the pug was dead.  You may recall Jenny mentioned in a few of our earlier blog posts about dog people  vs cat people and dog chew strips.

This sad news prompted research regarding Anaphylasis in dogs and how to prevent it if possible.

This is what we found out about anaphylaxis from the Dr.s Foster and Smith site :

Causes:

Stinging insects, antibiotics, vaccines, certain hormones and medications, and foods can cause anaphylaxis in susceptible animals.

Symptoms:

The most common symptoms are the sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, coma, and death. The animal’s gums will be very pale, and the limbs will feel cold. The heart rate is generally very fast, but the pulse is weak. There can be facial swelling.

Treatment:

Anaphylaxis is an extreme emergency. If you think your dog is having an anaphylactic reaction, seek emergency veterinary assistance immediately. Epinephrine should be given as soon as possible – we are talking within a few minutes. IV fluids, oxygen, and other medications are given as needed.

Can anaphylaxis be prevented?

In general, there is no way to predict which animals may have an anaphylactic reaction to which substances. If a dog has already had a reaction, such as anaphylaxis, angioedema, or hives, to a substance, the substance should be avoided. If your dog has ever had a reaction to a vaccine or medication, be sure your veterinarian knows and the information is placed in your pet’s medical record.

How do you prevent anaphylaxis? We guess it would be to never let your dog out of your sight.  That is a hard one…because a lot of dogs have fenced in areas outside to run or play.  Your dog could be bitten or ingest something inside your home as well.  THIS HAPPENED TO US WITH PHILOMENA…so don’t say it can’t happen.  Phil was inside and her face just started to swell.

Luckily, with Joe’s medical training, he observed her and she did not display all of the symptoms of anaphylaxis and her condition did not rapidly get worse, but it could have progressed.

We just wanted to increase awareness so that if you should see any of these symptoms, you know what it could potentially be.  Please seek veterinary attention immediately and stay safe fur friends.  We figured if educate just one fur friend’s pawrent, we have helped.

You know what we say, “One pet, one person at a time.”

Every once in a while some of us “forty somethings” still marvel at the wonders of the internet. That’s right kids, there was a world without computers, cell phones, microwaves, that we can remember.  By the way, we thought bag phones were cool, moving up from the car phone weighing only 6 pounds and costing $5.00 a minute.

The bag phone

So what amazed us recently was not microwave popcorn, although that is always fun to watch and not have to clean up the oily pot like we used to years ago before the Joe Namath , Butter Up Popcorn Popper that we had in college…butter melting through the holes in the top as the oil popped the kernels in the bottom of the unit. If Broadway Joe said it was good popcorn, well, there was no better endorsement…

We were amazed in fact by the birthday wishes we received for our mascot’s birthday.  About 120 people, from all corners of the world, wished Lookie Lou, “Happy Birthday”, “Buon Compleanno”, and “Joyeux Anniversaire”.  It was incredibly heartwarming for us to see a little cartoon dog’s birthday acknowledged.   You see, Lookie Lou was born from the imagination of two pet loving people trying to make the world a better place for pets everywhere.

Your acts of kindness really grounded us and reminded us sometimes, just taking a moment to acknowledge someone, share a greeting, a picture or share a special event, can validate them in a way that you can not image.  It may in fact change their life in a way that you would not have thought possible.  You, reaching out, can make a difference in the world.

Thank you and  Woofy Woo to you  for reaching out to Lookie Lou for his 2nd Birthday.  You made a difference in our lives.

We found this story on AOL Just wondering if it infuriates you as much as it does us…

BANGKOK -Authorities at Bangkok’s international airport found a baby tiger cub that had been drugged and hidden among stuffed toy tigers in the suitcase of a woman flying from Thailand to Iran, an official and a wildlife protection group said Friday.

The woman, a Thai national, had checked in for her flight and her oversized bag was sent for an X-ray which showed what appeared to be a live animal inside, according to TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring group.

The woman was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport before boarding her Sunday flight. The cub, estimated to be about 3 months old, was sent to a wildlife conservation center in Bangkok.

“The cub arrived at our unit Monday,” said Chaiyaporn Chareesaeng, head of the Wildlife Health Unit at the Department of National Parks’ Wildlife and Plant Conservation Center, where the animal was put under close supervision.

“He appeared exhausted, dehydrated and couldn’t walk, so we had to give him oxygen, water and lactation,” said Chaiyaporn. “We have monitored him closely. As of today, he looks better and can walk a little now.”

A DNA test was expected to provide details about its origin, said Chaiyaporn.

The woman, identified as Piyawan Palasarn, 31, faces up to four years in prison and a 40,000 baht ($1,300) fine for two wildlife smuggling-related charges, police said.

She denied the luggage with the cub belonged to her and said another passenger had asked her to carry it for them, said Adisorn Noochdumrong, head of an international wildlife division at the conservation center.

The cub could have fetched about 100,000 baht ($3,200) on the black market in Iran, where it is popular to have exotic pets, Adisorn said. He said he did not know what the woman allegedly intended to do with this particular cub.
