Who was here first? Photo:noveltycaketoppers.co.uk

Was your pet living with you before your significant other?  If so, there is a good chance you have experienced some form of jealousy from your pet regarding your new relationship.  The sideways glance and chortle or snort are just a few of the techniques used by our four legged friends who may feel displaced by your new relationship.

Cats and dogs scratching at the bedroom door if they are locked out while  meowing or barking in dismay.  It’s no wonder they aren’t sharpening the kitchen knives while plotting their evil revenge.  You see quite frankly, they feel replaced.  Much like what could happen when a new pet is brought into the home, it’s difficult making the transition from the one who used to share your vanilla ice cream to the one who is relegated to the floor without couch time. Say it isn’t so!

Easing the transition while introducing a new pride or pack member can take time. We all know how manipulative the little furry buggers can be, (regardless of what scientific research may not support the logic and reasoning side of the pet brain).    Spending “Special time” with your pet and holding firm when “No means no” will help ease your pets transition from being an only pet to being a member of your new family.

Allow your new significant other to have special bonding time with your pet as well. Training and playing with your pet establishes the newcomer as a member of the family.  Your pet will see your new partner as a new “treat giver” and “ear scratcher” if you allow some bonding between the two.

Until everyone settles in, try not to stress out and group hug!

An article in MSN on line tells a whale of a tale…the tale of a whale who crash-landed onto a sail boat with 3 adults on board near Cape Town, South Africa!  Shocking!

Actual pictures from the event photographed by passengers aboard a nearby boat. Photo: Paloma Werner

Apparently they were out sailing and watching the whale flipping his tail for over an hour when the unexpected happened.  The young Souther Right Whale jumped into the air and right into the boat’s mast, causing it to break under the whales massive weigth estimated at 40 tons.

This amazing photo was taken moments before the whale crashed into the boat! Photo: Paloma Werner

The three had just enough time to duck and take a little cover behind the the steering wheel and coach house as the whale landed squarely on the deck scraping bits of barnacles and losing chunks of blubber.  No one was injured during the incident.

The boat was able to make it’s way back to Table Bay Harbor without taking on water.

First of all, the story itself is incredible. But, could you imagine trying to submit this claim to insurance and tell this story without these photos?

A touching photo of the partnership between a soldier and a dog Photo: photoofrecord.com

The National World War II Museum in New Orleans has an exhibit running from July 22-Oct. 17 featuring those furry and feathered friends that helped with the war effort.    The National Museum website states:

“Animals were appreciated both for their labor and love, but unfortunately not all were shown humane treatment when their usefulness was no longer in dire need. This exhibit will focus on each different animal’s specific usefulness and specific role within a campaign…Loyal Forces: Animals in WWII will allow visitors to see another side of World War II, and demonstrate how lessons learned then continue to help us today in the utilization of animals and their unique abilities today. “

It sounds as if they are presenting a realistic view on what occurred during that time period.  If anyone is in the area and visits the exhibit, we would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Press Release

For Immediate Release: Ocean Grove, NJ

Pet News: TPPC.tv Pet Lifestyle Experts Predict The Top 5 Pet Trends for 2011

Economists and marketers take note! Pet lifestyle experts and TPPC.tv show hosts Robbin and Joseph Everett predict the top 5 pet trends for 2011.  The pet industry power house couple spent time analyzing trends and researching data in the pet industry.  Joseph Everett stated, “There are definite trends emerging for the coming year.  The economy, the environment and the state of mind of the average consumer are all contributing factors patterns emerging.”  Co-host and wife Robbin Everett stated, “The upcoming year will be extremely interesting in terms of what people have come to expect when making purchasing decisions.”

The Everetts predict the emerging trends are as follows:

1.)  An increase in savvy consumers will push brands to fully disclose and maximize nutritional content while making more natural pet food and snack choices widely available at reasonable prices.

Not everyone has access to a specialty store or can afford high price pet food, but consumers will continue to analyze what is available in the grocery store, making “Natural” or “Organic” choices when they are available and within a price range they can afford.  Robbin Everett explained, “People want to make informed decisions regarding pet nutrition.  They are becoming more sophisticated and educated regarding the nutritional needs of their pets.”

2.) Web TV and  Pet Bloggers  will become more influential  regarding buying decisions.

The world will continue to become smaller as social media becomes more predominant in the lives of pet pawrents.  On line communities, Web TV, YouTube, blogs, Twitter and Facebook disseminate information at lightening speed.  Pawrents can access information about pet products, health and training instantly via the web. Now with laptops,  iPads, and web access via phone, information can be accessed in the store, car or coffee shop.

As the influence of the Pet Blogging community increases with award event such as The TPPC.tv Pet Blog Awards and conferences such as Blog Paws, advertising dollars will increase in the Web TV and Blog arenas.  “Pet product manufactures are still trying to figure out the nuances of social media.” Robbin stated. Joe explained, “We are currently working with pet related brands to increase their visibility via social media. The inquires we are receiving from major manufacturers are trending toward ground breaking, paradigm shifts and partnerships for projects that will be so different from anything the marketplace has seen before.  The old boy’s club, traditional way of thinking will lead to a slow painful death of some brands.  They will realize that they missed the boat in a few years.” Robbin agreed, smiled and added, “The winners in the 2011 pet marketplace will be those who are like ‘Star Trek’…they bravely go where no brand has gone before.”

3.) The availability of Educational Toys for Pets will increase.

Pet consumers consider their pets their “Furbabies”.  Joseph Everett explains, “As the Baby Boomer generation ages and becomes empty nesters, they will look for stimulating activities for their pets.  We already see an increase in scheduled activities such as agility and play dates, so the market for educational toys for pets is a natural progression as awareness for pets to be mentally stimulated and challenged increases.”

4.) Green Awareness will increase driving the eco-friendly market place to new heights in 2011.

Some eco-friendly choices are available in the market place for pet beds, clothing, toys and collars, but many more will emerge.  The BP oil disaster has reignited awareness in the collective consciousness of the pet consumer.  Joseph Everett explained, “Watching the mayhem that humanity reeks on the animals in the environment will drive 2011 into the biggest eco-conscious pet marketplace ever.”  Robbin agreed adding,   “Eco-friendly cat litter and eco-friendly dog poop bags are two hot product categories to watch.  Durable, well made eco-friendly pet accessories such as collars and beds will also increase in demand.”

5.) Economical Whimsy Will Prevail

Fun, safe, inexpensive products with a sense of humor will help people relax and have fun with their pets.  Items such as colored pet fur styling aids to give Fido a blue Mohawk,  trendy bandanas and pet collar charms will make Pawrents feel good about pampering their pets. Robbin explained, “Consumers do not have huge amounts of disposable income for extras right now.”  Joseph added, “Pet Parents want to pamper and show off their best friends.  A little bling will be the thing Pawrents are looking for to make their anipals feel special.”

TPPC.tv is the #1 Pet Web TV Show in the world, watched by millions of pet lovers in over 35 countries.

A truck carrying animal carcasses overturned scattering the cargo of carcasses all over the road.  The truck was headed toward a meat packing plant.  The truck driver’s terrified pet monkey escaped the vehicle unharmed and climbed up a pole only to view the carnage from his perch.

The poor little monkey was coaxed down by the driver who was unharmed.  (No information was available regarding the breed of monkey.)

Another truck was sent from the meat packing plant to retrieve the carcasses from the road. (YUCK! Gives a whole new meaning to road kill.)

The accident happened on a sharply curved road in Medina, Ohio.  No charges have been filed and the crash is still under investigation.

Pets Need "Creature Comforts" at the Airports Too! Photo: downtownpets.com

Well finally, pets get their doo or to do their doo when traveling via air in the Washington, DC area.  There are several outdoor and indoor pet potties  or “Pet relief areas” available both airports.  We wish the rest of the airports in the world would take note.  The five pet relief areas at Dulles are fenced in and come complete with a fake fire hydrant on faux grass.  Three are outside the main terminal and, get this, two are insid the midfield concourse for ticketed connecting passengers.  This is the best part…the indoor locations also have ventilation and flushing systems. Woot!

Reagan National Airport has four outdoor, natural grass relief areas all near the securtiy side of Terminals A, B and C.

Get the full list of locations at  www.mwaa.com/reagan and www.mwaa.com/dulles, click the airport services tab.

With all of the Pet Airlines now in business and Pet Policies changing for the benefit of pet owners, it’s great to see these airports stepping up for flying pups.

Barre, Vermont may just put the bars on the kitty city jail with a leash law for roaming felines.  A free roaming cat caused some claws to come out given that he likes to use the neighbor’s yard as a personal potty.  The potential leash law was presented over 60 years ago and did not pass at the time.  Apparently a cat restraint law was passed in 1973 but never enforced.

The article in MSNBC.com stated:

“Reviews were mixed among residents lined up Tuesday at the Simply Creamies ice cream stand near City Hall.

“Have you ever tried walking around with a cat on a leash? It sounds kind of crazy,” said Cheyenne Roberts, co-owner of the Pit Stop Diner in Barre.

Thad Cochran of nearby Plainfield had this rejoinder: “If dogs have to have a leash, why not cats?”

TPPC.tv obtained an exclusive on this photo showing a protest in favor of the cat leash law.

As you can see, the birds and mice are in favor of having the cat leash law enforced.

We could debate the indoor/outdoor cat issue, but we are merely presenting the cat news for your information.

From the site: Can you guess which Tiger is Gracey? Photo: Conservation Cub Club

Cute, Cuter, Cutest! How adorable is this little conservation minded tiger?  Gracey is the tiniest tiger who writes this awesome blog, ” The Tiniest Tiger’s Conservation Cub Club” .  What we find interesting in that Gracey is such a wonderfully concerned citizen of the blogosphere! Raising money and awareness, Gracey has participated in the Blog for Change days and has “Chip ins” for various charities on her site.

About Gracey, from her Peeps:

“A few years ago I was fortunate enough to adopt an abandoned kitten from the local dog pound.  She was so tiny, she fit into the palm of my hand and was not yet weaned.  She looked almost exactly like my friend Ed’s beloved cat Hazel.  We decided that we could not leave the kitten there, so I picked her up, nestled her beneath my winter coat and home she came.

My first action was to get the kitten cleaned up.  She was filthy.  She even had mud impacted in her nose!  I gently washed the kitten in my bathroom sink.  I tried to get the mud out of her little nose but that mud was stubborn.  It took a little while for me to realize, that what remained was the stain on her pink nose.  Those little eyes were looking at me as though to say, I am so relieved that you brought me home from sleeping on the cold cement floor at the dog pound, but could you take it easy on my nose?   For fear that she would get too cold, I then got out my hair dryer, and with the diffuser on low, I dried her.  Her fur was so soft that she fluffed up like an Easter chick…”

There is more to the story, which is beautifully written and Gracey even has a book out!  So please check out her site and give her some awesome pet bloggy love!

This post came from our friends at 2 Dogs 2000 Miles…

Luke, Hudson and Murphy made the 2000 mile journey to raise awareness about canine cancer.

Do you have a dog who has had or is currently fighting cancer?

This will be the third year that 2 Dogs 2000 Miles will produce a beautiful calendar we call our “Cancer Can’t Keep A Good Dog Down” Calendar, and we’d like you to participate! We gather photo and story entries, publish them online for everyone to see and read, and then the voting begins. Each vote is $1.00 and voting lasts for several weeks. Last year’s proceeds went to three veterinary comparative oncology programs and to 2dogs2000miles.org. The year before we contributed to Morris Animal Foundation. The proceeds from the 2011 calendar will again be distributed to university programs and comparative oncology studies, and to continue the educational goals of our own 501c3 organization, 2 Million Dogs.

Interested? It’s easy to enter.

What to send:

1 digital photo per dog: Please make sure the photo is a minimum of 500kb resolution. 1 meg resolution is ideal. We accept the following file formats: .jpg and .gif. Please do not send them in a PDF or Microsoft .doc or .docx file as we cannot use these.

1 paragraph story about your dog.  Story length must be limited to 1000 characters or less. Please note — that’s 1000 characters not 1000 words. For the calendar, we’re limited in the size of stories we can publish. (Characters include things like punctuation, spaces, and all those funny little characters and symbols. Every keystroke is considered a character.) Want to know how many characters your paragraph has? Look here for a great character counter:  http://www.wordcountertool.com/

Please don’t forget to include the name of your dog, your name, and your email. When we receive your entry we will send you an email letting you know it was received. If it needs corrections (story too long, photo too small) we will send you an email telling you.

If you have more than one dog you’d like to enter into the contest, please do so! Same rules apply.

Send your submission(s) to: calendar2011@2dogs2000miles.org

We’ll take submissions from now until the deadline, July 31, 2010.

If you have any questions, please email: erich@2dogs2000miles.org.
