The latest from the trail....

A man and his "best friends" with a little laughter along the way.

Why We Are Walking Across the Country

In 2004 my dog, Malcolm was diagnosed with bone cancer.  Amputation and chemotherapy only slowed its progression and the cancer ultimately metastisized to his lungs.  After almost a two year battle, he was given rest.

Malcolm was only six when diagnosed and no one could tell me why or how he got this horrible disease.  Dogs are living longer these days said some.  It's genetics said others.  Or his diet.  Perhaps pesticides or administering multiple vaccinations at once.

We've known about cancer for over half a century and that we still don't know these answers was unacceptable to me.  And so I sold my truck, put my stuff in storage, & set out on the road with a pack on my back, my boys, Hudson and Murphy, at my side, and a simple
belief.

We can discover the cause of canine cancer.   After walking over 1000 miles thus far and meeting many thought leaders in veterinary oncology we're beginning to understand the challenges we face off the road to achieve that goal.

And this little cross country walk we're taking is only the beginning...

Announcement, March 7, 2009

Robinson will celebrate the one year anniversary of the walk at Community Park East located on
Dayton-Yellow Springs Road in Fairborn, OH at 6:30 on March 16th. The public is invited to celebrate with Robinson, Hudson and Murphy by taking a ceremonial walk around the park to honor the memory of Malcolm and the thousands of companion animals that have lost their battle with cancer.

Press Release, March 2, 2009

Cincinnati, OH - Inspired by the loss of his Great Pyrenees, Malcolm, to osteosarcoma in 2006,  Luke Robinson and his two dogs have embarked on a 2,400 mile walk to raise awareness of canine cancer and raise funds for the first ever nationwide epidemiological canine cancer study.
Area residents will have the opportunity to meet Robinson, Hudson and Murphy at the Cincinnati Canine Companion Center on Wednesday, March 4that 7:00p.m. The Canine Companion Center is located at 529 Loveland-Madeira Rd in Loveland, OH.  Other "friendly" dogs are welcome to attend as well. Visit their website at www.cincinnaticanine.com.

After the event on Wednesday, Robinson will be transported back to the road in Kentucky. Robinson and his dogs are scheduled to cross the Purple People Bridge as he enters Ohio from Kentucky on Friday, March 6th at Noon. Tim and George from Kiss107 will be there to cross the bridge with Robinson and his dogs. Everyone is encouraged to meet up on the Kentucky side of the bridge and walk across with them.

Robinson will also have a Meet and Greet at the Red Dog Pet Resort and Spa located at 5081 Madison Road on Sunday, March 8th from 1pm - 3pm. There will be rescue groups there with adoptable animals as well. For more information visit www.red-dogs.com.
At all of these events Robinson will talk about why he started this journey, the perils of walking 2,400 miles and what we can do to help find the cause of canine cancer. All events are free and open to the public.
The 2,400 mile walk has the goal of raising awareness about and funds for canine cancer research. The implications of this research are far reaching. Says Robinson, "For the first time, people are learning not only that dogs and cats get cancer, but they're the same types of cancers found in humans. Our message is starting to make a significant impact and our walk is touching the hearts of the thousands of people we've met so far."
Robinson's foundation has teamed up with Morris Animal Foundation (MAF), a Colorado-based nonprofit organization that funds health research to protect, treat and cure animals worldwide. MAF's Canine Cancer Campaign is an unprecedented effort to cure canine cancer within a dog's lifetime - the next 10 to 20 years. Cancer is the number-one cause of death in dogs over age 2, and this international effort is funding research into prevention, treatments, and cures. World-renowned scientists and cancer specialists agree that this MAF-led effort will save countless dogs from suffering and premature death. Learn more at www.CureCanineCancer.org.
