Beware the Social Ticks-They Will Suck You Dry!

Dealing with Social Ticks can drain us of our energy.

Dealing with Social Ticks can drain us of our energy.

Beware the Social Ticks-They will suck you dry!

On our last episode of Pets Teach Us So Much Radio, 75, we discussed ways to deal with those who leave feeling us zapped of our energy!  Listen to episode 75 to hear the segment.

Have you ever had a conversation with a friend that left you feeling drained and needing a nap?  Did you want to curl up with your pet and pull the blankies over your head?

Some conversations leave you feeling absolutely spent!  Negative Neds and Nellys will complain and whine while taking up your valuable time.  These interactions must be limited so you can conserve your energy and go about your day.  Unfortunately, you might even replay interactions with these individuals in your mind out of frustration.  This takes up even more of your brain-power and time.

By definition, Social Ticks may be co-worker, friends or relatives that are not very happy people.  In their opinion, the world is against the Social Tick.  They never get a break, everyone else is always wrong, they never are “lucky” and any problems they have with other people are always the other person’s fault. (***NOTE-think about who these people are in your life.  Do these people own pets?  Mostly we have found that they do not own pets. Weird, huh?)

People change over time.  Those old friends who you might have met years ago when they were happy, young and carefree may have turned into just the opposite now.  Sometimes, the self-centered attitudes of individuals involve interactions where they talk at you and never ask how you are!

The more you feed into the behaviors of the Social Tick, the more they drink your energy.  They will take what they want and offer nothing in return.  When they are done using up your energy, they simply drop away, only to return when they are hungry for someone to listen to them or make them feel better about themselves.

What can you do?  Use the “Tick Tock”!

The “Tick Tock” method is a technique we use to conserve our energy when dealing with these types of energy drinkers.  The “Tick Tock” method uses a time limit when interacting with Social Ticks.  Time limits are the key factor to winning the battle.

Set the time limit and expectation in advance.  For example, at the beginning of a phone call you received from a Social Tick, say something like, “Oh hi, I need to leave for the store in 10 minutes” or “I have a meeting in 15 minutes, so I can’t talk long.”  It gives you an out.  It sets the expectation of a time frame and conserves your energy.

The Tick Tock saves you the chore of fishing around for an “out”.  It also alleviates your stress by worrying about how to make an exit.  Don’t feed into the negative energy Social Ticks project while taking your positive energy.  Using the Tick Tock conserves your energy and your sanity.

Get The Treats You Want In Your Personal Life

Get the treats you want in your life

Get the treats you want in your life

On our last episode of Pets Teach Us So Much Radio, the most popular radio show for pet owners, we talked about how to get the treats you want in your personal life, both figuratively and literally.

How does a dog or cat tell you they want a treat?  Do they speak to you?

Perhaps they do, in a way.  They go over to the treat jar in the morning.  Nudge you after walkies and bark if you forget to give them a treat.  They really do become very specific about what they want and when they want it, don’t they?

This story was prompted by a conversation about gift giving.  Two people were talking about how their significant others were horrible gift givers.  They were always disappointed with what they received at the holidays.

They were setting unrealistic expectations.  Instead of  helping their spouses or setting a realistic expectation, they were setting up a self fulfilling prophecy of disappointment.  They just complained about their spouses for about an hour and sent out so much negativity.

Discussing expectations, budgets, likes and dislikes can lead to a realistic and happy gift giving experience.  It’s nice to think that puppies and rainbows magically appear when we smile, but that only happens on TV friends.

Stop putting out negative energy and help your spouse or partner.  If they truly care about you, they will listen and be happy to get suggestions to make you happy.

Always complaining leads to hard feelings and potential irreparable damage in your relationship.  Loving relationships need open communication and realistic expectations in order for you to get the treat that you would like in life.

Wag More and Live a Better Life

A wagging, thankful tail

A wagging, thankful tail

On our last episode of the Pets Teach Us So Much Radio Show, “The Love Genies”  talked about wagging tails and showing gratitude.

When talking about wagging tails, we think simply about a happy pet.  Perhaps, the pet is expressing gratitude for receiving a pat on the head, belly rub or treat.

This is a true story, (with the name of the individuals involved changed), that opened our eyes into the way of the tail wag.

“Sally” and a few friends were chatting about events of the weekend that had passed.  Sally said she was annoyed that her boyfriend, “Pete”, had gone out for a few drinks with his brother.  She said that she was annoyed that he woke her up when he came home by opening the front door and walking into the kitchen.  The floor is squeaky in their home and the squeaks in the floor were noisy.

But wait, let’s back up and give you a little background on Sally and Pete.

Pete had invited Sally  to live with him after they had only dated a short while because she had no where to go.  She had lost her lease and was not able to find an apartment in her price range.  Shortly after she moved in, Sally’s daughter, Shane needed a place to live, as she was going through a divorce.  Shane moved in with her baby daughter.  Now the three generations are living with Pete.

The house where they are living is standing today in a town that most are not.  Many homes in that area were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, either by flood or fire. During the storm, Sally and Pete had a generator to provide them with all of the creature comforts.  By the way, Sally is a cancer survivor.  She was out of work having multiple operations for months and is lucky to have survived.

She and Pete just recently returned from a lavish vacation that many only dream of.

During her vacation, she stayed in the private home of a well-known rock star, on a secluded beach.  The vacation included the services of a cook and a butler.  The home overlooked a beautiful bluff and contained a private pool with many scenic terraces.

OK, fast forward, back to being annoyed.  Sally was annoyed at the noise and that she couldn’t get to sleep because Pete was walking around on the squeaky floor.  Pete had asked his brother to stay over and they were coming up the stairs.  The squeaking was annoying Sally.  She was so angry…and annoyed.

She brazenly exclaimed to all of us, “I want a new house, this one is too squeaky.”  Yes, she was serious.

Instead of being thankful that she survived cancer, was living in a free house that was still standing after Super Storm Sandy or that she just came back from a fantastic vacation…she was annoyed and wanted a new (free) house from Pete, who has already provided her with so much.

Gratitude for the things you have enables you to wag more.  Thanking the powers that be, regardless of your religious beliefs, shows the universe that you are thankful for the things you are given.  We believe the more genuine gratitude you show for the things you have and the happier you will be in life.  Always feeling like someone has more or feeling sorry for yourself will ultimately only lead to your unhappiness.

Wag more, live a better life and be truly grateful for the gifts you have been given.
